Kerry James Marshall is an American painter known for his paintings of Black figures. I was listening to an interview with him, and he talked about all the different colors of black paint he uses — he mixes red, green, and blue into his black to make the color more evocative and expressive. Not being a painter myself, this had never occurred to me.
This brooch is the first in a pair inspired by that approach to color. One half is a deep matte black, the other a glossy, glitter black — two very different textures of the same color, set side by side in a sterling silver frame.
