This brooch is the second in a two-piece series inspired by painter Kerry James Marshall's approach to color — he spoke about mixing red, green, and blue into black paint to make it more evocative and expressive. Not being a painter myself, that idea had never occurred to me before.
Where the first piece in this series contrasts matte and glossy glitter black, this one is quieter — a matte, pebbled texture set against a smooth, sanded finish. Same color, same idea, a different conversation between the two halves.
